Condition: Colon Cancer

Be Aware and Be Proactive: Fight Colon Cancer Back.  Colon cancer is a malicious tumor rising from the large intestines inside walls. There is also rectal cancer, which grows in the last several inches of the colon.  Combined, doctors refer to these two as Colorectal Cancers    This might be one of the easiest cancers to treat.  But it requires early detection.  Lately there seems to be an increase of this cancer.  Cancer is an overwhelming disease.  Wellness by Nature believes in educating readers.  This article will give an overview of this illness.  As always, we would present informative and practical material about colon and rectal cancers – read, study, and please speak with your physician.

Cancer – What Is It?

Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide without control and invade organs through the blood and lymph’s.  There are many types of cancers:

How Cancer Normally Develops

Cells make new cells.  This needs to happen in an orderly manner. Indeed, the body’s needs determine the growth and division of cells accordingly. New cells come when old and damaged cells die away.  But, at times, this process does not happen, as it should.  Damage to the genetic material or DNA causes mutation of the cells.  These mutations affect orderly cell growth and divisions.  Some cells do not die as needed.  These cells form a mass, which becomes a tumor. Most cases of colon cancer begin as small, benign clusters of cells called adenomatous polyps. Over time, some of these polyps become colon cancers. Tumors can be

  1. Benign Tumors
  2. Malign Tumors

Factors in Causation of  Colon Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, there are certain factors to consider when dealing with Colon Cancer.

Smoking is an issue in most cancers.  Consequently, long term smokers tend to die from Colorectal cancer more often than non-smokers.  There is a possibility that as a person smokes, saliva transfers the cancer causing substance to other parts of the body, including the colon and rectal areas.

Drinking Alcohol in substantial amounts, alcohol increases the opportunity to develop Colorectal cancer.  This happens when the necessary level of folic acid in the body decreases with heavy use of alcohol. In fact, the American Cancer Society recommends no more than 1 alcohol drink for women and two for males per day.

Diet creates conditions for Colorectal cancer.  Indeed, a diet high in red meats and processed meats has cancer causing properties and processes.  Also, if you cook meats at high temperatures, this action might release colon producing chemicals.  This is a good reason to maintain a diet high on fruits, vegetables, whole grains cereals, bean and legumes among other healthier choices (see free Wellness by Nature  e-book on raw vegetables juicing).

Family History gives an indication to Colorectal cancer.  This is true for the first generation relatives, but the American Cancer Society recommends to also looking into the history of distant relatives.  The genetics tree of a family indicates the opportunity for Colorectal type and many other cancers.

Obesity increases the risk for colon cancer.  This is so because, fat tissue produces excessive amounts of estrogen; obesity may increase levels of insulin in the blood and this can influence the growth of tumors; fat cells produce hormones and bring the body into a lack of harmony and balance. This can create good conditions for colon and rectal cancer.

Possible Treatments

These treatments are applicable to a great number of cancers.  For Colorectal cancer, the stage of the cancer, from 1 to 4 is a determinant on type of treatment chosen by physicians.

  1. Surgery
  2. Chemotherapy
  3. Radiation Therapy
  4. Immunotherapy
  5. Vaccine Therapy
Colorectal Cancer Diagnostics Test
  • There are test able to find both Colorectal polyps and cancer.  The test seeks to find abnormalities in the colon organ.  The physician uses a specialized scope in the rectum seeking polyps.  The doctor can remove them before they become cancerous.  This is an important preventive test in the fight against colon cancer.
  • The other tests the stools or feces to find cancer cells.  These tests are easier to conduct but might not be as effective as the first test cited above.
Tests For Colorectal polyps and cancer
  1. Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
  2. Colonoscopy
  3. Double-contrast barium enema
  4. Virtual Colonoscopy
Tests Specifically For Diagnostic of Colorectal cancer
  1. Fecal occult blood test
  2. Fecal immunochemical test
  3. Stool DNA tests

There is also rectal cancer, which grows in the last several inches of the colon.  Combined, doctors refer to these two as Colorectal cancers.  Maligned cells develop when cells do not follow normal patterns and create clustersA test such as a Colonoscopy gives an opportunity to timely find the colon cancer and receive treatment. There are traditional methods to treat Colorectal cancer, such as surgery.  There are also non-conventional methods, such as Nutritional Therapies and mind, soul, and body therapies. There are risk factors, such as obesity that increases the risk for Colorectal cancers.  Please speak with your physician and do not delay seeking help.
