These are terms quite common in the current food industry vocabulary.  And they represent the current pattern of growing food in the USA and many parts of the world.  Please read and learn.  Wellness by Nature is convinced that individuals should know what they eat; where the foods in the family plate originate from; and how GMOS might affect wellness.   As always, have a conversation with your doctor.  But be informed!

Definition: GMOS or Genetically Modified Organisms

A Genetically Modified Organism is a plant, animal, and microorganism transformed through genetic engineering.

The Food Industry have genetically modified plants for

  • Insect protection
  • Herbicide resistance
  • Virus resistance
  • Enhanced nutrition
  • Tolerance to environmental pressures
  • Production of edible vaccines

The Food Industry have genetically modified animals for

  • Research
  • Model animals
  • Production of agricultural products
  • Production of pharmaceutical products

Genetic Engineering

This is a technique, in which an individual alters the original DNA and rDNA of living cells, and it evolves into something else, another organism, such as a genetically modified food.  This alteration produces new chemicals and functions in the organism. These chemicals and functions are not the original ones, but new modified organisms.

Genetic Engineering Systems

Genetic engineering is a group of techniques capable of transforming the genetic making of cells by moving genes among species and creating a new organism.  This process is highly sophisticated and influences the biological and chemical foundations of the cell.

Common Genetic Engineering Systems

  1. Recombinant DNA: this technique use genetic pathways, such as viruses to transport foreign genes into the cells.
  2. Microinjection: this technique involves simply injecting new genetic material into the recipient cell.
  3. Electro- and Chemical Proration: this technique involve creating pores or holes in the cell membrane to allow entry of the new genes
  4. Bio-ballistics: this technique usesprojectile methods to deliver the genetic material to the interior of the cell.

GMOS and Food Lab -Corn-Patent

Throughout the history of food, farmers have manipulated crops and even animals.  For example, selective breeding of dogs can create a better looking dog.  But this happened among similar species, such as animals with animals.  The present techniques can cross over among different species, such as animal with a plant, creating a variant, quite different from the original specie.  This creates mutated or altered foods.

GMOS and Organic Foods

In accordance with the USDA organic certification program, the food industry cannot genetically modify an organic seed; however, a GMO seed can infect an organic seed through cross-contamination and pollen drift.  Farmers are required to clean up the seed from the infection.  This is process is the responsibility of the organic farmers.

Common Ingredients Derivative from GMOS Crops

One basic principle in Wellness and Nutrition is to read labels.  Labels allow for the identification of ingredients and for informatively food choices.  These are some ingredients found in the grocery store aisles.  Some are alcohol based products   They are added to foods after a biochemical process.

These are derivatives from GMOS:

Amino Acids, Aspartame, Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Ascorbate, Vitamin C, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Ethanol, Flavorings (“natural” and “artificial”), High-Fructose Corn Syrup, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Lactic Acid, Molasses, Monosodium Glutamate, Sucrose, Textured Vegetable Protein, Xanthan Gum, Vitamins, Yeast Products.

Concern: GMOS and Food

While GMOS are growing in the marketplace, there is still a need for more testing.  We do not yet know the consequences of altered organisms in the human body.  However, there are a couple considerations regarding GMOS when selecting foods for the dinner table.

1-    GMOS produce the pesticide inside the plant.  This is a basic trait.

2-    This inbreed trait is what kills insects and other organisms when it comes close to a particular plant.

3-    There is a need for a concise evaluation of how the inbreed pesticide toxicity affects the human health.

4-    GMOS are restricted in countries such as Japan and Australia.  This leaves rooms for doubt.

5-    A hand full of companies control GMOS and there is a price for seeds.  Farmers have to pay for the seeds.  This is creating a monopoly.

6-    These companies practice bio- piracy, which is taking the original seed, modify it and sell it back (GMOS) to the farmers.  Some of these companies popular in the markets are DuPont and Monsanto
